Food. Food. Food.
I don't know why exactly, but it's a particularly hungry day. Does that ever happen to you?
Maybe this is because we have been in extended stays and hotels for a month,
waiting for our apartment to come through.
Which if that doesn't make sense, means that we don't want to buy a lot of food:
-No oven right now
-Don't want to have to move it all over to the apartment, we have more than enough
of everything else to fit in our car
-Not home at the hotel very much during the day anyway
Is this healthy? Who knows.
Somehow my grumbly stomach reminded me that I had promised some people to do a food post of our favorite cuisine from Washington D.C. It was pretty hard to narrow it down and not make this a novel. But here are the ones that made the cut. Finally.
My stomach just rumbled a chorus again.
Top left: Mango Sorbet from Trader Joe's. If you haven't tasted this, and there is a Trader Joe's anywhere within your vicinity, sprint and buy some. Best $4 and change you will spend for dessert night. It is exactly as if you crushed real mangoes from the tropics, blended them up a little, and froze them into a beautiful little carton. This was a weekly.
Top middle: We spent a whole rainy Saturday at George Washington's estate, Mount Vernon, forgetting to eat because there was too much there to SEE. By the time we were starting to nibble on the corners of our tourist maps (okay, not really) the only place close by was the Mount Vernon Inn and Restaurant. And the sole parties eating there that night were someone's highly shwanky anniversary dinner entourage, and...us. Appetizer menu to the rescue.
Top right, middle left, middle right: Maybe this little group made the post because they were part of three-course meals at a ridiculous discount during restaurant week. Location: Urbana. Menu selections: Artisan cheeses with date chutney and grilled walnut raisin bread. Prosciutto and arugula pizza. Apple tart tatin with honey-thyme ice cream. The end.
Bottom left: This tray of loaded nachos from Elephant and Castle tasted even better than it usually would have because we were on our way to a Nationals-Braves game.
Bottom right: You can't go wrong with a banana-nutella crepe. This one was from Crepeaway. I think I just stared at the picture again for a couple minutes trying to get it to materialize in front of me. No cigar.
And the grand prize winner:
THESE spicy hot wings from LOOK Restaurant and Lounge on K Street. They seared my mouth but this was forgiveable, because they were delicious.
To this day I have no idea what that restaurant injected them with, but now wings sound good all. the time. Which means persuading Bryan to take me to Buffalo Wild Wings for Wing Tuesdays and even Applebees for half-off appetizer happy hours--okay substitutes, but not quite the same.
Now pardon me while I run downstairs for as much hotel breakfast as I can carry.
